An earthquake is a sudden shaking of the ground. Earthquakes can cause fires, tsunamis, landslides, floods or avalanches. Türkiye is a country of earthquakes. We must be ready for the earthquakes because they can happen anytime. We must be aware of the risks and know how to behave before, during and after an earthquake.
You must prepare a family emergency plan and decide a place to meet during and after an earthquake. You must fix heavy furniture and cupboards to the walls. You shouldn’t put heavy objects on the shelves. You should learn “triangle of life” method.
Stay calm! If you’re indoors, you must stay away from wlndows, walls, glasses and outside doors. DROP to the ground, COVER your head with your hands and HOLD ON a strong object until the shaking stops. You mustn’t use elevators and try to leave the buildings.
If you’re outdoors, you should stay in the open area. If you’re in a car, you should stop the car in a safe zone and stay inside.
Stay calm! First, check yourself and others for injuries.
Then you must check water, gas, and electric lines for damage. You mustn’t enter the damaged buildings. You shouldn’t stay near the beaches. Tsunamis may hit after the earthquake. If you’re at school or work, you must follow the emergency plan.
